Jennifer Lopez’s dress stuns (and divides) at the 2026 Golden Globes

Jennifer Lopez turned heads on the red carpet at the 83rd Annual Golden Globes on January 11, 2026 — though not everyone agreed on how to interpret her bold fashion choice.

This year’s ceremony delivered no shortage of memorable moments, from Jennifer Lawrence’s daring “naked dress” to Sean Penn’s controversial smoking, Leonardo DiCaprio’s animated gestures, and, of course, Lopez’s eye-catching gown.

Arriving at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, the singer and actress wore a striking creation by Jean-Louis Scherrer for Stéphane Rolland. Marking her first Golden Globes appearance since her separation from Ben Affleck, Lopez ensured all eyes were on her.

The gown shimmered with brown lace and glitter, hugging her figure before flowing into a dramatic tulle mermaid hem that swept across the floor. She paired the look with a sleek French twist hairstyle and a soft side bang, while her bronzed makeup delivered a sculpted glow that sparked plenty of discussion. Completing the ensemble were morganite and diamond earrings, a coordinating diamond ring, and a brown clutch.

A surprising color choice

As expected, social media reactions were immediate and mixed.

“Looks like fish in the sea,” one Instagram user joked.

Another commented, “The dress is beautiful until the bottom — I’m not sure about all that lace flaring out.”

Still, many fans rushed to defend Lopez’s daring style.
“She may be many things, but she absolutely NAILS fashion every single time,” one admirer wrote.
“Make way — the mermaid queen has arrived! 🧜🤎,” another added.

One fan even compared her favorably to other attendees, remarking, “Looks better than that shower curtain the other girl wore,” seemingly referencing Jennifer Lawrence’s ensemble.

Others praised the unexpected color choice. “I love this dress. Her hair looks incredible. You don’t often see her in this shade — she should wear it more,” one supporter noted.

Makeup sparks debate

While the dress earned both praise and criticism, Lopez’s makeup became a talking point of its own.

“What’s going on with all that bronzer on her forehead?” one fan asked, while another bluntly stated, “That’s a lot of bronzer.” One summed it up by saying, “The contouring on her cheeks and jaw is intense.”

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the event, Lopez revealed that the gown came from LILY et Cie. “It’s mine,” she said, explaining that it was a vintage piece from the early 2000s.

Her jewelry came courtesy of Sabyasachi Jewels. According to the brand, her earrings were crafted in 18K gold with morganite and EF VVS VS brilliant-cut diamonds, paired with a matching ring featuring tourmaline and diamonds in the same cut and quality.

Fashion that always gets people talking

At 56, Lopez is no stranger to fashion choices that spark conversation.

Just weeks earlier, she drew attention at a school play for her daughter, Emme Muñiz, where she was seen alongside Ben Affleck’s daughter, Fin. Grainy photos showed Affleck in a blue suit with his son Sam and Jennifer Garner nearby, while Lopez briefly chatted with Sam near the entrance.

Although the adults kept their distance throughout the evening, social media wasn’t focused on their interaction — it was focused on Lopez’s outfit.

She wore a beige jacket left unbuttoned, revealing a plunging neckline and hints of black lace underneath. Much like her Golden Globes appearance, reactions were divided.

“Why would you wear an open shirt to a child’s play?” one commenter asked.
“JLo’s desperate outfit for a school play,” another wrote.

Others echoed similar sentiments, questioning the appropriateness of the look. Still, some fans were more forgiving. “JLo looks great,” one supporter said, while another highlighted the family dynamic: “Samuel loves JLo — that says a lot.”

A few commenters focused on the moment itself, adding, “What a sweet family moment to witness.”

Love her or criticize her, one thing remains certain: Jennifer Lopez knows how to command attention — whether she’s walking a red carpet or attending a school play.
