I spent a couple of nights at my friend’s previous apartment and saw these unusual bumps

About a week ago, I asked a friend if I could stay in his old apartment while my own place was being renovated. He agreed, and I moved in without giving it much thought.

A few days later, I began noticing strange, itchy bumps appearing on my skin—mostly on my legs and back. I hadn’t changed my hygiene routine, was using the same shampoo, and continued bathing regularly, so I started to suspect that something in the apartment might be causing the reaction.

Before I could afford a visit to the doctor, I turned to the internet to see what might be responsible for the bumps. Every search seemed to point to the same culprit: bed bugs.

The apartment was quite old, and the mattress had clearly been there for years. Still, when I inspected it closely, I couldn’t find any visible signs of bugs. Just to be safe, I dragged the mattress onto the balcony and left it in the sun for an entire day. I also layered multiple bed covers before sleeping on it again. Unfortunately, none of this helped, and I had no choice but to continue sleeping there for the rest of the week.

According to the NHS, bed bugs are tiny insects that often live in furniture or bedding. While their bites are not dangerous and do not spread disease, they can be extremely itchy and uncomfortable.

Bed bug bites can disrupt sleep and are often difficult to distinguish from bites caused by other insects. Not everyone reacts to them, but certain symptoms may help identify whether bed bugs are the cause.

Red, itchy bumps: Bed bug bites usually appear as small red bumps on the skin. Although they don’t cause serious health problems, the itching can be intense. Excessive scratching may break the skin, leading to bleeding or secondary infections.

Bites on exposed skin: Bed bugs typically feed on areas of skin that are uncovered while sleeping, such as the arms, legs, neck, and back.

Delayed reaction: The bites are not always noticeable right away. Itchy welts may appear hours, days, or even weeks later, depending on how a person’s body reacts. The duration and severity also vary from person to person.

Allergic reactions: Some individuals are more sensitive to bed bug bites. In rare cases, bites can cause large welts, painful swelling, or, very rarely, anaphylaxis—a severe allergic reaction that can be life-threatening.

If you suddenly notice unexplained red bumps on your skin, it’s best to consult a medical professional for proper advice and treatment.
