In a late-night Thanksgiving message on Thursday, the U.S. president reignited some of his strongest immigration rhetoric, criticizing political opponents and calling for what he described as a permanent halt to migration from “all Third World countries.”
What began as a standard holiday greeting on his Truth Social account quickly shifted into an extended tirade about immigration, crime, and his rivals.
Trump said his proposed migration freeze was influenced by a recent fatal shooting in Washington, D.C., involving a suspect who is an Afghan national. He blamed what he viewed as overly permissive immigration policies, accusing “American Citizens and Patriots who have been so nice in allowing our Country to be divided, disrupted, carved up.”
The 79-year-old president then repeated familiar grievances, targeting Somalia and Somali immigrants in Minnesota. Speaking to reporters earlier in the evening, he claimed “Somalians have caused a lot of trouble” and insisted, “We’re not accepting their people anymore. We’re sending many of them back because they only bring problems.”
He further alleged that Minnesota had become a “hub of fraudulent money laundering activity” and argued that Somali refugees were “completely taking over” the state.
Trump Aims Harsh Insult at Gov. Tim Walz
In one of the most provocative portions of his Thanksgiving message, Trump used an offensive insult to attack Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Blaming Walz for what he described as politically correct immigration policies, Trump wrote that the governor “does nothing, either through fear, incompetence, or both.”
Walz responded on X, reposting the message with the caption, “Release the MRI results,” referencing Trump’s recent admission that he had undergone an MRI but had not disclosed the reason.

Attacks on Rep. Ilhan Omar and Ongoing Immigration Critiques
Trump also directed harsh criticism toward Minnesota Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, who was born in Somalia and has lived in the United States for three decades.
He called her “the worst member of Congress in our Country” and mocked her attire, saying she is “always wrapped in her swaddling hijab.” He described her birthplace as a “decadent, backward, and crime-ridden nation” and accused her of frequently disparaging America.
The president tied his grievances to current immigration policy, pointing to Rahmanullah Lakanwal—the Afghan man accused in the recent D.C. shooting. CNN reported that Lakanwal applied for asylum in 2024 and received approval from the Trump administration in April 2025.
When a reporter noted that federal agencies confirmed Afghan arrivals had been thoroughly vetted, Trump dismissed her as “stupid” and did not clarify whether he was in office when Lakanwal’s asylum was approved.
Migration Freeze and Immigration Review Plans
In his post, Trump argued that many immigrants originate from “failed nations or from prisons, mental institutions, gangs, or drug cartels,” claiming they rely heavily on “massive” welfare programs. He renewed his call to “permanently pause migration” from all “Third World countries,” saying this step was necessary to give the U.S. “time to fully recover.”
He added that his administration would deport any foreign national considered a security threat, a public charge, or “non-compatible with Western Civilization,” ending with the assertion that “only REVERSE MIGRATION can fully cure this situation.”
Earlier on Thursday, Trump ordered a sweeping review of all green card holders from “countries of concern.” Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Joseph Edlow described the review as “full-scale,” emphasizing that public safety was “non-negotiable.”
Trump closed his Thanksgiving message with:
“Other than that, HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL, except those who hate, steal, murder, and destroy everything that America stands for — You won’t be here for long!”
