Bruce Willis is now living in a single-story home separate from his family as part of an ongoing care plan following his dementia diagnosis, according to his wife, Emma Heming Willis.
In a new ABC special titled Emma & Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey, Emma spoke candidly about what she described as one of the most difficult decisions she has faced since learning of her husband’s condition.
The beloved Die Hard star was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in 2023, less than a year after first being diagnosed with aphasia. Since stepping away from public life, updates on Willis’s health have been limited.
Earlier this year, a source told In Touch that Willis’s appetite had noticeably declined, explaining that he often does not express hunger. Family members reportedly struggle to ensure he eats regularly and maintains a diet that supports his health — a challenge familiar to many families caring for loved ones with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
The source added that his cognitive abilities continue to decline, noting that he can no longer communicate effectively and sometimes struggles to recognize people.

Around the same time, Emma Heming Willis pushed back against what she called “misinformation,” particularly claims suggesting that “there is no more joy” in her husband’s life.
Speaking with Diane Sawyer in the ABC special, which aired on August 26, Emma revealed that Bruce was moved into a nearby home designed specifically to meet his care needs.
“I knew, first and foremost, Bruce would want that for our daughters,” Emma said, referring to their two children, Mabel Ray, 13, and Evelyn Penn, 11. “He would want them to grow up in a home that was centered around their needs, not his.”
The decision was made some time ago after the family learned that noise could worsen Bruce’s condition. As a result, the girls were no longer able to host playdates or sleepovers.
“I didn’t know if other parents would feel comfortable leaving their children at our house,” Emma shared. “I isolated our whole family — and that was intentional. It was a very difficult period.”
Despite the separation, Emma emphasized that Bruce’s new residence feels like an extension of their family home.
“We’re there often,” she said. “It’s truly our second home. The girls keep their belongings there.”
She described the space as one filled with “love, warmth, care, and laughter,” adding that she has been deeply moved by how many of Bruce’s longtime friends continue to visit, bringing joy and companionship into his life.
Emma also reflected on the early warning signs of Bruce’s illness, describing them as unsettling.
“He was always so talkative and engaged,” she explained. “But he became quieter. During family gatherings, he would sort of fade into the background.”
“He felt distant — not like Bruce, who was always warm and affectionate. That shift was frightening.”

While Bruce remains physically active and otherwise healthy, Emma noted that his condition continues to affect his communication.
“Overall, Bruce is in good health,” she said. “It’s his brain that’s failing him. His language is slipping away, and we’ve had to adapt. We’ve learned a different way to communicate — but it’s still communication.”
