On Tuesday, November 11, communities across the nation paused to honor the sacrifices of America’s veterans. Through the non-profit Honor Flight Network, groups of veterans from every corner of the country traveled to Washington, DC, to take part in the day’s commemorations — and one group received a welcome they’ll never forget.
When a flight carrying Korean and Vietnam War veterans landed in the nation’s capital, the heroes were met by an unexpected visitor: former President Barack Obama.
According to ABC News, Obama surprised the group arriving from Madison, Wisconsin, stepping aboard their plane as it reached the gate. Picking up the intercom, he delivered a heartfelt message that instantly moved everyone on board.
A Moment of Gratitude
“Hello, everybody,” Obama began. “As we approach Veterans Day, I wanted to stop by and just say thank you for your extraordinary service. To you, your family — the sacrifices that all of you made to protect our country is something that will always be honored, and we are very grateful.”
The veterans’ reactions were filled with emotion and excitement as they realized who had come to greet them.
This special trip was made possible by the Honor Flight Network, an organization dedicated to flying veterans and their families to Washington, DC, so they can visit the memorials built in their honor. Over the past two decades, the nonprofit has brought more than 300,000 veterans to the capital — all free of charge.
“Participation in an Honor Flight trip gives veterans the opportunity to share this momentous occasion with other comrades, remember the fallen, and share their stories and experiences with other veterans,” the organization notes on its website. “Honored veterans always travel free of charge, thanks to generous donations.”
An ‘Honor’ to Welcome Them
Obama later reflected on the encounter in a post on Medium, calling it a true privilege.
“Ahead of Veterans Day, I was honored to welcome a flight of veterans and their families as they arrived in Washington, DC,” he wrote. “To all those who bravely served our country, thank you to you and your family for your extraordinary service. The sacrifices that all of you have made to protect our country will be honored today and every day.”
He also mentioned sharing a meaningful keepsake with the veterans.

“One of the honors of serving as President is having the Presidential Challenge Coin — a memento that I have handed out as President and in the years since to the folks I meet who have served our country or their communities,” Obama explained. “I was grateful to be able to greet veterans who served in Korea and Vietnam as they arrived in DC this weekend, and give them a personal token of my gratitude.”
A touching reminder of the courage and sacrifice of our veterans. Please share to honor those who have served.
