Recognizing the warning signs of a brain aneurysm can be difficult, but health experts are working to increase public awareness of this potentially fatal condition.
According to the Mayo Clinic, a brain aneurysm occurs when a blood vessel in the brain develops a bulge or balloon-like shape, often resembling a berry attached to a stem. If the aneurysm leaks or bursts, it can lead to bleeding in the brain, known as a hemorrhagic stroke. The most common type of hemorrhagic stroke caused by a ruptured aneurysm is a subarachnoid hemorrhage, which occurs in the space between the brain and its thin surrounding tissues.
The Mayo Clinic highlights several key symptoms of a ruptured brain aneurysm, including:
Sudden, severe headache (often described as “the worst headache of my life”)
- Blurred or double vision
- Confusion
- Dilated pupil in one eye
- Drooping eyelid
- Fainting
- Nausea or vomiting
- Pain around one eye
- Stiff neck
- Sensitivity to light
- Seizures
- Weakness or numbness

The Brain Aneurysm Foundation notes that a sudden, intense headache is often the first sign of a leaking or ruptured aneurysm. While not everyone will experience all these symptoms, if you notice several of them at once, it’s critical to seek immediate medical attention—either by calling an ambulance or having someone else drive you to the hospital. Do not attempt to drive yourself.
A leakage before a full rupture is known as a sentinel bleed, which is typically signaled by an abrupt, persistent headache lasting for days. Early medical intervention is vital to prevent a full rupture.

The exact cause of brain aneurysms remains unclear. However, doctors have identified certain risk factors, including age (particularly older adults), being female, high blood pressure, smoking, and heavy use of alcohol or drugs. Brain aneurysms may also result from head injuries, blood infections, or, in some cases, may be present from birth.
