Amanda didn’t hesitate to act when she heard about Bear, a lost and abandoned puppy wandering in the Evans Creek mountains.
Together with her friend Dylan, she set out to find the frightened dog. For more than an hour, they tried to lure Bear with food and treats, but nothing worked — the pup stayed at a distance, wary and afraid.
When they returned the next day, Bear was still in the same spot. Again, their efforts to coax him closer failed. That’s when the two friends came up with a bold new idea.

Amanda would pretend to be in trouble — lying down and “playing dead” — to trigger Bear’s curiosity and compassion. The following day, Amanda put the plan into action, lying on the ground in the spot where she believed Bear would see her.
Two hours later, something remarkable happened.

The story began in Evans Creek, Washington, when a passing motorist spotted a thin, frightened dog near a campsite. When the driver tried to approach, the dog growled and backed away.

Days later, Amanda heard about the stray — now known as Bear — and decided to help. She and Dylan wanted to get him to a vet where he could receive care. Yet Bear refused to come near anyone, no matter how many treats they offered.
That’s when Amanda tried her unusual tactic: curling into a fetal position and pretending to be unconscious.

For 20 minutes Bear cautiously sniffed her before walking off. An hour later he returned and sat quietly by her side. Little by little, Bear began to relax, sensing that Amanda meant no harm.

Over the next two hours, trust bloomed. Finally, Bear allowed Amanda to lead him to the car, and together they drove to the veterinarian for a full checkup.
Thanks to Amanda and Dylan’s patience and determination, Bear finally got the care he desperately needed.

Although the Washington-based animal welfare group Lost & Found Pets tried to locate Bear’s original owner, no one came forward. Fortunately, a loving family stepped up and adopted him, giving Bear the forever home he deserved.
