Popular shampoo recalled over deadly bacteria risk

German company Henkel has issued a recall for more than 1,000 bottles of its Tec Italy Totale Shampoo after concerns that some products may be contaminated with Klebsiella oxytoca—a dangerous bacterium linked to infections of the skin, eyes, and respiratory system.

The company reported that the shampoo was distributed in New York and California, though it may have reached other states as well. Consumers in Europe also have access to Tec Italy through online purchases.

According to Henkel’s recall notice, the affected product comes in a green 33.81 fl. oz. (1 liter) plastic bottle with lot number 1G27542266 printed on the side and UPC code 7501438375850.

Health risks associated with Klebsiella oxytoca vary. While the bacteria typically live harmlessly in the intestinal system, it can become life-threatening if it spreads to other parts of the body. Infections may cause fever, chills, cough, and shortness of breath, and in severe bloodstream cases, the fatality rate ranges from 10–20%. Individuals with weakened immune systems face greater risks.

Henkel emphasized that no injuries or illnesses have been reported so far. However, anyone who experiences symptoms or has medical concerns related to this recall should seek immediate medical advice.

The recall has been classified as Class II, meaning the likelihood of serious health consequences is low, but temporary or reversible health issues may occur.

Consumers who purchased the affected shampoo should stop using it immediately and return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.

Henkel added:
“Consumers with questions should reach out to a healthcare professional. Safety remains our top priority.”
