On a serene spring morning in 2017, 23-year-old Hannah Simmons was driving her nine-month-old daughter, Alannah, to a routine doctor’s appointment in Gainesville, Georgia. Accompanied by her best friend, the short drive turned tragic when Hannah’s car collided head-on with a truck.
The crash claimed the lives of all three—Hannah, her baby, and her friend—leaving their families shattered with grief. In the days that followed, however, an unexpected photograph from the crash site offered a small measure of comfort and an unforgettable image of hope.

That day, 19-year-old Anisa Gannon was en route to work when she came upon the scene of the accident. With the road blocked, she paused and took a photo to show her boss why she’d be delayed. At the time, she didn’t notice anything unusual. But later, while reviewing the image, Anisa spotted something striking—a radiant beam of light appeared to shine down from the sky directly onto the wreckage.
Moved by what she saw, Anisa shared the photo with the victims’ families. Upon seeing the light, the relatives were overwhelmed with emotion. Anisa’s aunt, Tara, described the image as looking like “they were going to heaven.”
Though some have suggested the light may be a reflection on the car’s windshield, the families view it differently. For them, the photo offers a powerful sense of peace—an ethereal sign that their loved ones had found their way to a better place.
Jodi Simmons, Hannah’s mother, said she “absolutely” believed the beam symbolized a “pathway to heaven.”
In the face of heartbreaking loss, moments like these can provide solace. When words fail, even a simple image can offer hope and healing.
