On August 8, 2023, police discovered Sara’s body at the family home in Woking, Surrey. Reports later revealed that she had endured a prolonged "campaign of torture" over a two-year period. According to the BBC, she had been subjected to beatings, burns, and severe physical trauma. The injuries included more than 70 wounds—fractures to her spine, injuries to her ribs, shoulders, fingers, a puncture wound to the head, and signs of abuse including a burn caused by a domestic iron and human bite marks.

A handwritten note, confirmed to be from Urfan Sharif, was found near Sara’s body. In it, he admitted to beating his daughter, adding, “I swear to God that my intention was not to kill her. But I lost it.” He also wrote that he planned to flee but would return “before the postmortem.”

Sharif, along with his partner Beinash Batool and his brother Faisal Malik, left the UK for Pakistan a day before Sara’s body was discovered. An international manhunt followed, resulting in all three being returned to the UK and charged in connection with Sara’s death.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

The three suspects initially denied responsibility. However, during court proceedings, Urfan Sharif changed his account and admitted, “She died because of me.”

On December 17, 2024, Sharif was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 40 years. Batool received a life sentence with a minimum term of 33 years. Malik was sentenced to 16 years for causing or allowing the death of a child.

During sentencing, Mr. Justice Cavanagh described the abuse as “a campaign of torture” and added that “the degree of cruelty involved is almost inconceivable.”

Sara’s birth mother, Olga Domin, delivered a moving victim impact statement in court. Referring to the three convicted individuals as “sadists,” she said, “Although even this word is not enough for you. I would say you are executioners.” She paid tribute to her daughter, stating, “She is now an angel who looks down on us from heaven. She is no longer experiencing violence.”

Violence Behind Bars

After his conviction, Urfan Sharif was placed in HMP Belmarsh, a high-security prison in South London. According to reports, he quickly became a target among inmates—a reflection of the prison subculture that often places those convicted of crimes against children at particular risk.

Speaking to The Sun, a prison source said, “Sharif has tried to keep his head down... but word quickly got round about who he was. Although many inmates are serving time for serious offenses, crimes against children are viewed as especially egregious.”

On New Year’s Day, Sharif was reportedly attacked in his cell by two other inmates using a makeshift weapon crafted from a tin can lid. He sustained serious injuries to his face and neck, requiring stitches and continued medical care. While he survived the assault, it is believed that he will carry lasting scars.

One of the alleged attackers has been identified in media reports as Steve Sansom, a convicted murderer serving a life sentence for the 2024 killing and dismemberment of Sarah Mayhew. Sansom also has a prior murder conviction from 1999.

Public Reaction

The case continues to provoke strong emotions among the public, with many expressing a belief that justice is still unfolding. As details emerge, conversations around child protection, domestic abuse, and prison justice remain central to the broader societal impact of Sara’s story.
