Serious Health Update
On May 18, Biden’s office confirmed the 82-year-old had been diagnosed with stage nine prostate cancer, which has metastasized to his bones. The diagnosis follows an evaluation prompted by increasing urinary symptoms and the discovery of a prostate nodule.
A statement released by his team read:
“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone.”
The statement added that while the cancer is aggressive, it is hormone-sensitive, allowing for potentially effective treatment. Biden and his family are currently exploring treatment options with his medical team.
Biden’s health has been a recurring topic of public interest, especially during his presidency and his brief 2024 re-election campaign. He withdrew from the race three months before Election Day, following a challenging debate with Donald Trump and growing concerns about his well-being. Vice President Kamala Harris assumed leadership of the Democratic campaign shortly after.
Trump Offers Words of Support
Despite a history of political rivalry, Donald Trump responded to the news with an unexpectedly empathetic message. Posting on Truth Social, he wrote:
“Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”
Kamala Harris Sends Her Support
Vice President Kamala Harris also offered a message of support on social media, acknowledging Biden’s strength and resilience:
“Doug and I are saddened to learn of President Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis. We are keeping him, Dr. Biden, and their entire family in our hearts and prayers during this time,” she wrote. “Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership. We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery.”
Biden’s Ongoing Battle with Cancer
This is not Biden’s first encounter with cancer. In 2023, while still in office, he underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. He had also previously received treatment for skin cancer.
Throughout his career, Biden has been a vocal advocate for cancer research and care, a cause deeply personal to him following the death of his son, Beau Biden, from brain cancer in 2015.
As the former president faces another major health challenge, public figures from across the political spectrum have expressed support and hope for his recovery.
