Former President Barack Obama recently spoke candidly about his marriage during an appearance at Hamilton College, responding with humor to persistent divorce rumors. In a light-hearted moment, he joked about working his way out of what he called a "deep deficit" in his relationship with Michelle Obama.
“I was in a deep deficit with my wife,” he told the students. “So I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things.”
The Obamas have found themselves the subject of speculation lately, with rumors circulating about their relationship. Some reports even falsely linked the former president to Friends star Jennifer Aniston—a claim Aniston addressed during an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, clarifying that she has only met Obama once and dismissed the dating rumors as untrue.

Barack Obama has previously acknowledged the strain that his presidency placed on his marriage. In a 2023 interview on CBS Mornings, he shared, “Let me just say this: It sure helps to be out of the White House and to have a little more time with her.”
Michelle Obama has also discussed their relationship publicly. On her podcast IMO, co-hosted with her brother Craig Robinson, she reflected on the challenges of syncing up with her husband’s schedule and habits.

“Barack, you know, he had to adjust to what ‘on time’ was for me,” she said. “You know, I’ve got this husband who’s like, when it’s time to leave, it’s 3, he’s getting up and going to the bathroom. And I was like, dude, a 3 o’clock departure means you’ve done all that.”
Michelle has also opened up about life as an empty nester. Speaking on Sophia Bush’s podcast Work in Progress, she described this new chapter of her life as freeing.
“It’s the first time in my life all of my choices are for me,” she said, adding that being an “empty nester” has been liberating.

Speculation about the Obamas’ marriage was further fueled by Michelle’s absence from certain public events, including Donald Trump’s inauguration and former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral. Addressing the assumptions, Michelle pointed to a broader issue many women face.
“That’s the thing that we as women, I think… we struggle with disappointing people,” she explained. “So much so, that this year people… couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself. They had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.”
Despite the rumors, both Barack and Michelle Obama have addressed the speculation with a mix of candor and humor, emphasizing that their relationship—like any long-term partnership—has its ups and downs but is grounded in mutual respect and ongoing growth.
