Ivanka Trump Faces Backlash For Audrey Hepburn-Inspired Ball Gown

Ivanka Trump found herself at the center of controversy over her fashion choice at the 2025 Liberty Inaugural Ball in Washington on Monday.

For those who may have missed it, her father, Donald Trump, was officially inaugurated for his second term as president earlier this week, having previously served from 2017 to 2021. As expected, social media users meticulously analyzed every aspect of the historic day, from Elon Musk’s alleged gesture to Melania Trump’s hat and even lip-readers attempting to decipher Barron Trump’s conversation with Joe Biden.

In a climate where no detail goes unnoticed, even Ivanka Trump’s gown became a topic of debate online.

Ivanka, who served as an advisor during her father’s first term, chose a dress inspired by one of the most iconic female figures in cinema history—Audrey Hepburn. Her gown was a modern reinterpretation of the dress Hepburn famously wore in the 1954 film Sabrina, originally designed by Hubert de Givenchy.

Ivanka’s version, reportedly crafted by the renowned French fashion house Givenchy, featured white fabric adorned with black floral embroidery and a short train. She accessorized with elbow-length black opera gloves, stiletto heels, a diamond choker, and a sleek chignon hairstyle, closely mirroring Hepburn’s classic look.

While many admired her elegant ensemble, criticism was inevitable in today’s social media landscape. One user commented, “The more I look at it, the more ridiculous it seems.” Another critique compared the details of Ivanka’s dress unfavorably to the original, stating, “The embroidery and texture lack the refinement of Hepburn’s version.”

Some responses were more pointed, with one individual asserting, “Audrey Hepburn would be appalled. She endured World War II and stood for values completely opposed to the Trump family. It’s disgraceful to see her dress repurposed like this.” Another simply stated, “Audrey would not have liked Ivanka or her family.”

However, not all reactions were negative. Many praised Ivanka’s beauty and the choice to pay tribute to an iconic fashion moment. Notably, Sean Hepburn Ferrer, Audrey Hepburn’s son, expressed understanding for Ivanka’s homage to his late mother. Speaking to DailyMail, he remarked, “Growing up in a household where my mother was a well-known figure, it makes sense that Ivanka would look to her for inspiration—especially for such a significant event. It coincides with the 32nd anniversary of my mother’s passing and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. What a meaningful combination.”

Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, have stated they will not be taking on official roles in the White House during Donald Trump’s second term.
