Generation Z is often seen as a mystery to older generations, just as Millennials once were. Their behaviors, communication styles, and preferences can sometimes be difficult to understand. However, taking the time to learn about these differences can help bridge the gap between generations.
One interesting shift in communication involves emojis—particularly the thumbs-up emoji. While many people see it as a simple way to acknowledge a message, some Gen Z individuals find it passive-aggressive or even triggering.
A young professional who recently entered the workforce shared their experience:
"I started a new job where we use Microsoft Teams to communicate. The platform has a limited set of reaction emojis, with the thumbs-up being one of the most commonly used. I’ve noticed that my colleagues use it frequently, but I personally avoid it. Instead, I prefer heart reactions or replying with a short message like ‘Great!’ or ‘Thanks!’ (Though I sometimes feel like I overuse exclamation marks, but that’s another issue)."
They continued, "Even though I know it’s normal for people to use the thumbs-up emoji, I still find it unsettling. Does anyone else feel this way?"
Many others agreed. One user commented, "For younger people (I’m 24, for reference), the thumbs-up emoji often comes across as passive-aggressive."
Another added, "It probably feels impersonal. Based on your post, you seem like someone who values more genuine interactions."
This conversation highlights a generational difference in digital communication. While older generations may view the thumbs-up emoji as a straightforward sign of approval, younger individuals might interpret it differently.
