With Deep Sadness… We Send Our Prayers to The Springsteen Family: Heartbreaking Details Ahead

In the new documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Patti Scialfa—Bruce Springsteen’s wife and a vital member of the E Street Band—opens up about her battle with multiple myeloma, a rare cancer she was diagnosed with in 2018.

The documentary premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Scialfa shared how her diagnosis has impacted her ability to perform and tour with the band.

Scialfa first joined the E Street Band in 1984 and has enjoyed a successful solo career, releasing multiple albums. Throughout her musical journey, she has collaborated with well-known artists such as Don Cherry, Narada Michael Walden, David Johansen, and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. In addition to her talents as a singer-songwriter, she has also worked as a producer on various films and documentaries.

Scialfa and Springsteen were married in 1991 and have three children together: sons Evan and Samuel, and daughter Jessica.

Reflecting on the challenges she has faced since her diagnosis, Scialfa shared, “It felt amazing to be back on stage,” but acknowledged that her health has made it difficult to tour consistently. “Touring has become a challenge for me. My immune system is compromised, so I have to be mindful of what I commit to and where I go.” As a result, she now makes limited appearances.

Despite her condition, Scialfa maintains a positive outlook. “Every once in a while, I’ll come out for a show or two and get to sing a few songs on stage—that’s a real joy,” she said.

Though she didn’t attend the documentary’s premiere, which will be available to stream on Hulu and Disney+ starting October 25, Scialfa revealed that the film offers fans “a glimpse into a side of our relationship that you don’t usually get to see.”

“Performing alongside Bruce is always a blast,” she added. “Every night on this tour is an opportunity for the band to celebrate together.”
