Man Collects Pennies For 45 Years, Stumping Bank Tellers When he Finally Cashes in

Many people spend a portion of their lives collecting various items, whether it's stamps, baseball cards, or something else of sentimental value. But one man took his passion for collecting to an extraordinary level, amassing a staggering number of pennies over the span of 45 years.

Think about how many pennies you might collect if you saved every one you came across for just a month. Now, imagine extending that period to a full year. The total would likely grow significantly. Now, consider the incredible feat of collecting pennies for 45 years.

This man embarked on a lifelong journey to collect as many pennies as he could find. Every day, he picked up coins from the ground, searched through couch cushions, and kept every penny that crossed his path. Year after year, his collection grew larger and more impressive.

When the time came to cash in his collection, he made a visit to the bank. The bank staff was in awe of the sheer volume of pennies he had accumulated. As they counted and recounted the stacks, they marveled at his dedication.

His determination and passion for penny collecting are a true testament to the power of perseverance. His story reminds us that even small, seemingly insignificant actions, like saving pennies, can lead to remarkable achievements over time.

Otha Anders, a teacher from Louisiana, began his coin-collecting journey in the late 1960s. However, it wasn’t about accumulating wealth—he simply enjoyed it. Even when the government launched a program offering $125 for every $100 worth of pennies, he wasn’t tempted to cash them in. Anders cherished his collection.

For him, collecting pennies was much more than a hobby—it became a spiritual practice. Anders saw each penny as a reminder to stop and say a prayer. "If I found a penny while pumping gas, in a store, or on the ground, it would prompt me to pause and pray," he shared with ABC News. "I never failed to do so. That’s why these pennies held so much value to me."

Throughout his years of collecting, Anders refused to accept pennies as gifts. "Not even my wife or children could give me pennies without compensation," he explained. "I wanted the personal satisfaction that this collection was something only God and I built together."

This practice of gratitude became essential to Anders. He noticed that whenever he wasn’t being sufficiently thankful, a penny would appear to remind him. "I came to believe that finding a lost or dropped penny was God’s way of encouraging me to remain grateful. On days when I forgot to pray, a penny would often show up to remind me."

Over time, Anders filled giant water jugs with his pennies. His initial goal was to fill five large jugs, but once he reached that milestone, he couldn’t stop. Eventually, he had no choice but to take his collection to the bank, having filled 15 five-gallon jugs.

"I wanted to stop at five, but I couldn’t. If I hadn’t taken them to the bank, I would have kept going," he said.

Although his collection had immense personal value, it also had significant financial worth. After realizing that his homeowner’s insurance wouldn’t cover his collection, Anders contacted Origin Bank in Ruston, Louisiana, where he had been a longtime customer. The bank was happy to assist with this unusual request.

“We value all our customers, and we were happy to help Anders with this endeavor,” said Jennie Cole, the bank’s Vice President. Opening the jugs with an ax and counting the coins took over five hours, but by the end, the total value of Anders’ collection was revealed.

After 45 years of collecting, Anders had gathered an incredible 513,614 pennies, totaling a little over $5,136.

Otha Anders’ remarkable penny-collecting journey is a testament to dedication, faith, and gratitude.
