Tamayo Perry, a Surfing Star And Actor From ‘Pirates of The Caribbean,’ Died in a Shark Attack

Tamayo Perry, a beloved lifeguard and surf instructor known for roles in films like Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Blue Crush, tragically passed away on Sunday following a suspected shark attack on Oahu’s North Shore, Hawaii, officials announced.

Perry, 49, had served with Honolulu Ocean Safety for eight years and was widely respected as a North Shore waterman, according to a statement by Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our dedicated City and County of Honolulu lifeguards, who tragically lost his life today in an apparent shark attack on the North Shore," said Blangiardi. "Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and colleagues in Ocean Safety during this incredibly difficult time."

Blangiardi praised Perry for his bravery, commitment, and sense of duty, describing him as a hero who tirelessly worked to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.

The Honolulu Emergency Services Department confirmed that a surfer was fatally injured in a shark attack off Goat Island on June 23, just before 1 p.m. local time. Lifeguards retrieved Perry's body using a Jet Ski, and EMS paramedics declared him deceased at the scene.

At a press conference, Acting Chief Kurt Lager of Honolulu Ocean Safety expressed the community's deep affection for Perry, stating, "Tamayo Perry was a beloved lifeguard."

Emilia Perry, his spouse and a fellow surfer, reflected on his passing, saying, "Although his loss is tragic, he departed this world doing what he loved, in the place he loved most."

Known for his skill at Pipeline, one of Oahu’s renowned surf breaks, Perry was also noted in the surfing community for his close friendship with singer Jack Johnson and his lifelong connection to Oahu’s east side, as noted by the Encyclopedia of Surfing.

Together with his spouse, Perry operated a surf school on Oahu’s North Shore.

Condolences poured in from across the surfing world on Monday. "This is incredibly difficult to comprehend," wrote surfing legend Kelly Slater. "You truly lived the life you loved."
