At the start of last month, a notable moment unfolded within the British royal family.
Prince Harry returned to London to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. During his brief visit, however, his brother Prince William received a prominent new military appointment from King Charles III—an announcement that many viewed as a pointed contrast to Harry’s presence in the UK.

The Palace confirmed that King Charles had named Prince William as the new colonel-in-chief of the Army Air Corps. In its statement, the Palace said: “His Majesty the King will officially hand over the role of Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. In August 2023, following His Majesty’s Accession, the King announced a series of military appointments, including that the Prince of Wales would assume this role. The position was previously held by His Majesty the King, as Prince of Wales, for 31 years.”
Royal commentator Tom Quinn claimed the news deeply affected Prince Harry. “Harry was reportedly in tears when he heard,” Quinn said, adding that the appointment was especially painful because the role was given to “the very person Harry sees as responsible for many of his struggles—his brother.”
Quinn also suggested the timing was intentional. “The announcement was made during Harry’s short visit to the UK for maximum impact,” he claimed. “It sends a clear message that Harry is no longer welcome within the royal fold.”
The appointment carries added significance given Harry’s own military history. William now oversees the same unit in which Harry once served. In 2008, Harry completed his Army Air Corps grading and pilot selection process, later beginning pilot training in 2009.

According to Harry’s former official biography, he went on to train as an Apache Attack Helicopter pilot after successfully completing the Army Pilots Course. It also noted that he received his provisional wings from his father—then colonel-in-chief of the Army Air Corps—making the moment particularly meaningful for him. That biography has since been removed from the royal family’s website.
William’s new role comes at a time of heightened public interest in the strained relationship between Prince Harry and King Charles. Speculation has intensified over whether the two met during Harry’s recent visit, though it was confirmed that no meeting took place due to the King’s “full programme.” Harry later said he hoped to see his father soon.
Despite ongoing tensions, Harry spoke positively about returning to the UK. He described the Invictus anniversary event as “amazing” and praised the work of Scotty’s, highlighting the vital support the organization provides to children and families.
“The more opportunities there are to hold events like this, the more families and kids become aware of what’s available to them—and that’s what really matters,” Harry said, according to the BBC.
