Eye-opening approval ratings reveal what Americans truly think about Trump’s second term

Since returning to the White House, Donald Trump and his team have frequently presented their actions as historic achievements. According to Trump’s own claims, policies on tariffs have generated billions for the United States, gas prices are at record lows, and progress toward a stronger, healthier, and more prosperous nation is well underway.

But Trump’s messaging has often been challenged for blending fact with exaggeration or misleading statements, and many senior officials remain publicly loyal despite deep divisions over his style of governance.

Nevertheless, there’s considerable evidence that a large segment of the American public views his leadership more critically than he portrays.

Since being sworn in for his second presidential term on January 20, 2025, Trump has moved quickly to implement wide-ranging policies. From confronting issues abroad to pushing aggressive immigration strategies, his approach has drawn intense debate both domestically and internationally.

High-profile foreign actions, including the U.S. military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and renewed efforts to pursue the acquisition of Greenland, have sparked controversy and raised questions about America’s role overseas. Meanwhile, unrest in several states, ongoing immigration policy disputes, and unresolved scrutiny regarding Trump’s connections to Jeffrey Epstein’s records have all heightened public scrutiny of his presidency.

Despite Trump’s assertions of success and control, independent polling tells a different story.

A recent AP-NORC Center poll shows that public approval of Trump’s job performance remains modest and largely unchanged from earlier in his second term, with a significant majority of Americans expressing disapproval.

According to the poll, approximately 40 percent of U.S. adults say they approve of the way Trump has handled his role as president, while about 59 percent disapprove.

On key policy areas, the poll finds:

  • Economy: Roughly 37 percent approve of Trump’s economic leadership, while 62 percent disapprove.
  • Immigration: About 38 percent express approval, with 61 percent disapproval.
  • Foreign policy: Approximately 37 percent approve, compared with 61 percent who disapprove.
  • Trade negotiations: Around 37 percent approve, while a majority disapproves.

These figures suggest that while Trump’s base remains supportive, a broad portion of the electorate remains unconvinced by his performance and priorities one year into his second term.
