The internet’s favourite political conspiracy theory has made a fresh return — the claim that a “fake Melania” occasionally steps in for the real First Lady.
If you haven’t heard it before, the premise is straightforward: some conspiracy theorists believe that US President Donald Trump, 79, sometimes replaces his wife Melania, 55, with a body double during public appearances.
The rumour resurfaces every few months whenever the couple is seen together, with online sleuths analysing everything from their expressions to their posture, searching for supposed signs of a stand-in.
There has never been any evidence to validate the claim, and Trump himself has repeatedly dismissed it as “fake news.” Still, believers continue to highlight oversized sunglasses, slight differences in demeanour, or variations in Melania’s movements as “proof.”
The theory has once again gained traction after the Trumps returned to Washington, D.C., on 30 November following their Thanksgiving trip to Florida.
In video footage, Trump steps off Marine One first, followed by Melania. They walk hand-in-hand toward the White House as cameras flash around them. But this time, it wasn’t their interaction that reignited the rumour — it was Melania’s outfit.
The First Lady wore a dark green trench coat, brown heeled knee-high boots, and, most notably, a large pair of sunglasses. It was this last detail that sent social media into a frenzy.
People couldn’t understand why she would be wearing sunglasses at night and quickly revived the “Melania double” conspiracy.
One user wrote:
“She’s a fake Melania — that’s why she has to wear dark glasses when it’s pitch black outside.”
Another added:
“Her face looks different. Her body language is off. Melania doesn’t toss her hair like that.”
Others simply commented: “Not Melania,” and “The Melania body double is wearing sunglasses at night.”
Another person declared:
“Fake Melania wearing sunglasses at night is the giveaway.”
The speculation continued:
“Why is she wearing sunglasses?”
“That’s not the real Melania. That’s one of the substitutes.”
One user even confessed:
“I keep staring and wondering if that’s actually Melania or the fake Melania. I keep going back and forth.”
But in reality, Melania is famously fond of sunglasses — even after dark — so the accessory is hardly unusual for her. And with the barrage of camera flashes illuminating her arrival, the choice seems even less mysterious.
As one commenter pointed out:
“There are tons of flashing lights — they look incredibly bright.”
This isn’t the first time the rumour has made the rounds. Similar claims circulated in September when the Trumps returned late at night from a state visit to the UK, and again last November when Melania drew criticism for wearing sunglasses indoors.
