My neighbor asked me to wrap their house’s door handle with aluminium foil — the reason stunned me

My neighbors and I have always been more like extended family than people who simply live next door. We check in on one another, help with babysitting when needed, share the occasional dinner when our busy schedules allow, and look after each other’s homes during trips.

So when my neighbors were suddenly invited on an unexpected holiday and had to rush out the door, I naturally agreed to keep an eye on their place. But shortly after they left, they called with a rather unusual favor—and it completely puzzled me.

They wanted me to wrap their front door handle in aluminum foil.

I didn’t ask any questions. Instead, I grabbed the roll of foil and walked over to their porch, feeling a bit silly as I carefully wrapped the handle. I couldn’t help imagining what the rest of the neighborhood would think if they saw me doing this strange task. Still, I followed through.

But the whole time, I kept wondering why. Was it some kind of superstition? A home remedy for something? A quirky habit? I tried to brush it off, but curiosity got the better of me.

When they finally returned a few days later, I casually brought it up—trying not to sound too nosy.

My neighbor burst out laughing and explained that the foil was a simple trick to check if anyone had tried to open the door while they were gone. If the foil was torn or disturbed, they’d know someone had attempted to get in. Since it was still perfectly intact, they knew the house had been safe the whole time.

I couldn’t help but laugh, thinking, “Isn’t that what security cameras are for?” But since they hadn’t installed any yet, this little DIY method worked just fine.
