Air travel can be a mixed bag—you either meet a quiet, respectful seatmate and enjoy a smooth journey, or you find yourself stuck wishing airplanes had an “eject” button for your fellow passengers.
That was precisely the situation I found myself in on a 14-hour flight from Sydney to Los Angeles. What was supposed to be a peaceful journey turned into an airborne circus thanks to a pair of overly enthusiastic honeymooners.
I had been away for months and was longing to reunite with my wife and son. To make the trip easier, I even splurged on a premium economy seat. Everything seemed perfect—the flight was on time, my seat was comfortable, and things were looking up. Then, in came Dave and Lia.

They stumbled down the aisle in an explosion of giggles, bumping into seats and documenting every moment like stars in their own romantic comedy—much to everyone else’s annoyance.
When they reached my row, Dave flashed a wide grin. “Hey mate, think you could swap seats with my wife? She’s a few rows back. Honeymoon, you know?” I asked where she was seated, and when he pointed deep into economy, I nearly laughed. “I paid extra for this seat,” I replied. “If you’re willing to cover the upgrade, I’m happy to switch.” His smile faded. “You can’t put a price on love!” he protested. I shrugged. “Seems like you can. About a thousand dollars.”
I must’ve instantly earned the title of “enemy of love,” because what followed was an impressive display of airborne pettiness. Dave began coughing dramatically, then started watching an action movie on his tablet—without headphones. When passengers complained, he announced, “Sorry, folks! Let’s all enjoy it together!”

I tried my best to tune him out, but when Lia squeezed into his seat and the two started whispering and giggling loudly, I’d had enough. I flagged down a flight attendant and explained, “They’ve turned this row into a honeymoon suite.”
Dave tried to plead his case, but the attendant wasn’t having it. “Sir, you can’t sit on another passenger’s lap. Actually, both of you will need to move—to the back.”
The cabin erupted into applause as the couple begrudgingly shuffled down the aisle. The remainder of the flight? Absolute bliss.
