Renowned heart surgeon Dr. Jeremy London—followed by more than 550,000 people on TikTok—recently shared four common habits that most of us do daily but should actually avoid for the sake of our long-term health.
1. Using Mouthwash
Many people believe that using mouthwash daily keeps their mouth healthy and fresh. However, Dr. London warns that it can do more harm than good.
“Stop using mouthwash. This is one thing that I absolutely avoid as a cardiac surgeon,” he says.
The reason? Most mouthwashes—especially alcohol-based ones—destroy both good and bad bacteria in the mouth. Since beneficial bacteria from the mouth travel to the gut, this imbalance can negatively affect your gut health and overall well-being.
2. Smoking Tobacco Products
According to the World Health Organization, tobacco use is a major risk factor for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, more than 20 types of cancer, and numerous other chronic conditions.
Dr. London emphasizes, “Smoking is the worst thing you can do to yourself. It damages the lining of your blood vessels, increases the risk of atherosclerosis and blockages, and causes cancer.”
3. Drinking Alcohol
Unsurprisingly, alcohol also makes the list of habits to quit. “It’s toxic to every cell in your body,” Dr. London explains.
Even small amounts can increase your risk of developing cardiovascular disease, despite popular claims that occasional drinking might be safe.
4. Eating Processed Foods
A balanced diet is essential for a healthy mind and body. Dr. London recommends that we limit or completely eliminate processed foods from our meals.
According to the NHS, overconsumption of processed foods has been linked to type 2 diabetes, obesity, and bowel cancer.
Dr. London’s advice is simple but powerful—making small lifestyle changes can have a major impact on your heart and overall health.
