Jana Hocking, a sex and dating columnist for Mail Online, recently shared a rather unexpected experience from her latest assignment — attending an orgasm retreat.
While most retreats focus on relaxation, healing, or personal growth, the one Hocking visited offered something decidedly more intimate. Speaking on the Just Between Us podcast, she revealed she attended the “Back to Body Sex Retreat” in California’s Joshua Tree National Park — a program designed specifically for women to reconnect with and prioritize their own sexual pleasure.

The full stay came with a hefty price tag of $15,000, which drew a stunned reaction from the podcast hosts. Hocking noted, however, that shorter weekend programs are available for under $1,000.
“I expected it to be filled with bold extroverts putting on a show for one another,” she admitted. “But it wasn’t like that at all. Some women were recently divorced and had never truly experienced a satisfying orgasm, while others were healing from trauma and relearning how to enjoy intimacy. It was actually quite moving.”
The retreat, led by founder Pamela Madsen and her team, began with participants sharing why they had come — the calmest part of what would turn into a highly unconventional journey.
From there, the program moved into tantric meditation. “We had to hold our vulvas and rock gently, either naked or in underwear, speaking to them — telling them what we wanted, who we wanted to be, and our goals,” Hocking recalled. Her personal goal: reclaiming ownership of her sexuality. “I realized I was performing — I can fake a Meg Ryan-style orgasm like a pro — but was I really putting my own needs first?”
One of the more memorable moments involved Madsen receiving a half-hour of foreplay from a male assistant, culminating in orgasm before the group. “It went on so long, I got bored,” Hocking admitted. Another session saw a urologist offering a live anatomy lesson, using Madsen as the model. “We all gathered around as she pointed things out — ‘this is your labia, this is your clit.’”
Although Hocking was the only attendee who didn’t orgasm during the retreat, she left feeling more informed, empowered, and confident about achieving satisfaction in her own time.
