During Donald Trump’s inauguration, Melania Trump stood prominently by his side. But since then, her public presence in Washington has significantly declined, sparking curiosity about how she is approaching her role as First Lady this time around.

In an interview with Fox News, Melania shared her perspective, stating, “I will be in the White House. And you know when I need to be in New York, I will be in New York. When I need to be in Palm Beach, I will be in Palm Beach. But my first priority is, you know, to be a mom, to be a first lady, to be a wife. And once we are in on January 20, you serve the country.”
Her devotion to her son, Barron, has long been a key priority, something the public has come to recognize. While former President Trump made headlines as the first sitting president to attend the Super Bowl, Melania was notably absent.
Still, she has made a few public appearances. Last month, she accompanied her husband to Los Angeles, where they met with wildfire victims. A clip of Melania speaking Slovenian to one of the women they met quickly went viral and was widely praised on social media.
“Seeing Melania so much more involved this time around is amazing,” one user commented, according to the Irish Star. Another added, “When we speak to people in their native tongue, they feel heard, they feel listened to, they feel the love! What an incredible First Lady.” A third remarked, “Even in a ballcap, Melania shows her beauty and grace.”
Despite these moments, Melania has remained largely absent from high-level meetings with world leaders and key political figures. According to People Magazine, a source revealed that her attention has been focused on filming a documentary about her life—something that has kept her away from official duties.
“This is how she lives,” the source explained. “She will never be a traditional First Lady and has her own vision of how she wants to engage.”
Reportedly, her recent visits to the White House have been tied to the documentary's filming. A political insider based in Miami confirmed the project, saying, “Melania has been busy shooting her documentary, which has taken place in several locations, including the White House.”
The film, inspired by the success of her memoir Melania, is intended to offer viewers an intimate look at her life and routines. Speaking with Fox News, she elaborated, “I had an idea to make a film about my life. My life is incredibly busy, and I told my agent to make a deal for me. We started the production in November, and we’re shooting right now. It’s a day-to-day look at my life—what I do, what responsibilities I have—things people don’t really know.”
Although she attended the recent Governors Ball, CNN noted that Melania has yet to fully step into a formal First Lady role. A source familiar with the Trumps’ living arrangements explained, “They both live at Mar-a-Lago and have quarters in the White House, but she leads her own life and joins him when appropriate in either place.” When in Palm Beach, Melania is said to maintain a low profile, occasionally joining her husband for dinner.
Controversial author Michael Wolff, known for his criticism of Trump, claimed on The Daily Beast podcast that even Trump’s campaign team was unclear on Melania’s whereabouts. “She doesn’t live with him,” Wolff asserted. “They spend very little time together. Whenever she’s at the White House or Mar-a-Lago, it’s like she’s a guest. She basically lives in Trump Tower now.”
He further alleged that during the Republican National Convention, Melania refused to sit next to her husband and only agreed to appear on the final day under the condition he wouldn’t be in the VIP box.
The Trump team has strongly denied such claims. Though the couple hasn’t directly responded, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung issued a fiery rebuttal to Newsweek: “Michael Wolff is a lying sack of s** and has been proven to be a fraud. He routinely fabricates stories from his sick and warped imagination. His Trump Derangement Syndrome has clearly rotted his brain.”*
Despite the speculation, Melania made a rare and celebrated public appearance on April 1 at the Women of Courage Award Ceremony. Dressed in a striking leopard-print dress, she delivered a heartfelt speech.
“Love has inspired me to embrace forgiveness, nurture empathy, and exhibit bravery in the face of unforeseen obstacles,” she said. “Today, we celebrate courage — a strength that is based in love. We are honored to join an exceptional assembly of brave women who have shown their love and refuse to let fear or hardship define them. Their collective achievements and dedication move us all.”
As Melania Trump continues to chart her own course—balancing personal projects, family, and selective public appearances—her role as First Lady remains uniquely her own.
