Dogs are often called man’s best friend, but few tales capture the depth of that bond quite like the story of Officer Cory Masterson and his K9 partner, Reno.
While chasing suspects through a dense forest, Officer Masterson was ambushed. A blow to the head knocked him unconscious, leaving him vulnerable and alone on the forest floor.

But Reno was not far behind.
Sensing the danger, Reno raced through the trees and came upon a harrowing scene: one of the assailants stood over Cory, knife in hand. Without hesitation, Reno leapt into action, biting down on the attacker’s arm and holding on fiercely, even as he suffered injuries in the fight. Eventually, the suspect fled into the woods, and Reno returned to his fallen partner’s side.
Hearing sirens in the distance, Reno darted toward the sound and led the responding officers to Officer Masterson. Cory was rushed to the hospital while Reno remained in the care of another officer.
The next morning, Reno waited anxiously outside the patrol car, eager to be reunited. But the news was grim—Cory had suffered a severe skull fracture and was in a coma. ICU rules kept Reno from seeing him, and the loyal dog was sent home with another officer.

Weeks turned to months. Cory remained unconscious, eventually moved home under 24-hour nursing care. Reno was finally allowed to stay by his side—and once he was, he never left. Day after day, he lay quietly in the room, eyes always on his partner.
Then one Thursday night, everything changed.
Reno suddenly sprang up and scratched urgently at the nurse’s door. Alarmed, she followed him to Cory’s bedside—and saw his fingers twitch. It was the first sign of life since the attack.
From that moment on, Cory began a long and difficult journey to recovery. He gradually relearned how to speak and walk, though his health remained fragile. Through it all, Reno was always there, his silent shadow.
Then, one night, Cory rose to go to the bathroom. Reno, ever vigilant, sensed something wasn’t right. Moments later, Cory collapsed, seizing violently. Foam gathered at his mouth as he convulsed on the floor.
Reno barked frantically and clawed at the nurse’s door until she rushed in. Paramedics were called, and CPR began. But after a while, the responders stopped. Cory showed no signs of life.
They declared him gone.

But Reno refused to leave his partner. Growling, barking, and standing guard, he kept everyone away from the lifeless body—until a sudden, gasping cough broke the silence.
Cory was alive.
Doctors were stunned. He had experienced the rare “Lazarus phenomenon,” where a person’s heart restarts spontaneously after CPR has ended. The police department later released a statement commending Reno’s heroic instincts.
In the end, it wasn’t just loyalty that saved Cory—it was love. Reno sensed life where others saw none. He never gave up, even when everyone else did.
This was more than a partnership. It was a story of devotion, trust, and the kind of bond that transcends words—one between a man and his dog.
