The U.S. Attorney’s Office has announced the arrest and sentencing of Kevin Dominguez, a 26-year-old resident of Texas, in connection with a human smuggling incident at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on U.S. Highway 57.
According to the statement, Dominguez drove a sedan to the checkpoint, where a trained Border Patrol canine detected something suspicious in the vehicle’s trunk. Upon inspection, agents discovered a person concealed inside.
Rather than comply, Dominguez reportedly reversed his vehicle, striking a Border Patrol agent, and fled the scene, leading to a high-speed pursuit. Aerial support was deployed during the chase, which ended when Dominguez and a passenger exited the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot through an open field. Authorities later identified the passenger as an undocumented immigrant from Honduras.

Dominguez was apprehended and charged with assaulting, resisting, or impeding a federal officer. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison by a court in Del Rio, Texas.
This incident is one of many reflecting the heightened border enforcement measures currently underway in Texas. Federal agencies have ramped up operations targeting serious criminal activity, including human smuggling networks and individuals with prior criminal records.

To date, numerous individuals have been arrested as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle organized smuggling rings and curb unlawful border crossings. These measures are part of a broader initiative to reinforce national border security.
However, the increased enforcement has drawn criticism from some human rights groups, who argue that the government may be overreaching and bypassing established legal procedures. They caution that while security is important, it must be balanced with due process and respect for civil liberties.
