Experts Caution Against Using Air Fryers Instead of Ovens

Technological innovation has certainly found its way into the kitchen, and air fryers are leading the charge. These compact appliances have surged in popularity, often replacing ovens and slow cookers in many households.

Air fryers work by circulating hot air at high speeds to cook food, offering a healthier alternative to traditional deep frying—delivering crispy results with little to no oil.

However, not all foods are well-suited for air frying, according to culinary experts.

While some might be disappointed to learn that broccoli loses its appeal when air fried—lacking the depth of flavor that comes from traditional cooking methods—it’s other foods that pose more serious concerns.

One major no-go is popcorn. According to The Mirror, air frying popcorn can be hazardous. Kernels can become trapped in the appliance’s heating element, creating a potential fire risk.

Another tricky item is food with wet batter. For instance, achieving the golden, crispy coating on fried chicken is difficult in an air fryer. The appliance doesn't get hot enough to properly set the batter, often resulting in a soggy, uneven coating.

Money-saving expert Martin Lewis also shared a practical warning: while air fryers are efficient for small, quick meals, they’re not always the most cost-effective option.

“Air fryers are good for small things that cook quickly,” he said on This Morning. “But if you need to use it 15 times for different items, the overall energy use could be higher than just using an oven.”

He added, “Microwaving a jacket potato for 10 minutes is far cheaper than running the oven for an hour and a half just for one.”

Steven Kipling of Which? echoed this sentiment. “The savings drop off when you have to cook in batches. Air fryers typically have less capacity than an oven or hob. So if you’re cooking a large meal, the oven may still be the most economical option.”

Still, many loyal air fryer users are undeterred. One user joked, “I’m not listening to him on this. I’m air-frying everything—I’d even air fry a cup of tea!”

So what do you think? Are you firmly on team air fryer, or do you prefer to mix things up in the kitchen?
