Everyone copes with stress differently. While some people find peace in simple pleasures like going for a walk or chatting with friends, others may fall into unhealthy patterns, such as emotional eating. Although turning to food for comfort can offer short-term relief, it often leads to long-term consequences.
Ashley Bratcher, a 27-year-old wife and mother from Texas, knows this all too well. Struggling with the emotional wounds left by her mother’s abandonment during childhood, Ashley found solace in food. Over time, this coping mechanism led her weight to spiral out of control.

“If my mom had been present, things could’ve been different,” Ashley said. “As the oldest, I felt it was my job to protect my younger siblings. I let everything happen to me so it wouldn’t happen to them.”
By the time Ashley decided enough was enough, she weighed 725 pounds. Determined to take back her life, she applied to appear on TLC’s My 600-Lb Life, where she began working with renowned weight-loss surgeon Dr. Younan Nowzaradan.
Dr. Now gave Ashley a sobering warning: if she didn’t change her lifestyle, she wouldn’t live past the age of 30. That wake-up call became the turning point in her journey.

At the time, Ashley couldn’t manage even the simplest tasks. Her 5-year-old son had taken on the role of caregiver. “He’s my hero,” she said. “He helps me with nearly everything. Without him, I’d be completely lost.” Her transformation was as much for him as it was for herself.
Before qualifying for gastric bypass surgery, Ashley followed a strict calorie-controlled diet and lost 123 pounds. Her surgery was a success, and she eventually shed a total of 255 pounds, regaining control of her life and health. “This journey has been not only physically intense, but emotionally challenging too,” she told People magazine.
Ashley later appeared on My 600-Lb Life: Where Are They Now? in 2018, proudly revealing that she had dropped below 300 pounds and no longer relied on food to manage her emotions. She also rediscovered joys she had once lost—like shopping and taking long showers.

Through social media, Ashley continues to inspire thousands. Her Instagram is filled with snapshots of her progress and encouraging messages. “Surgery is just a tool,” she says. “It doesn’t change your mindset—you have to do that work yourself.”
Ashley’s husband, Jack, has remained by her side through it all. The couple recently celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary, a testament to their strength and commitment.
Ashley’s journey is a powerful reminder that change is possible—even in the face of immense challenges. Her story continues to inspire, showing others that reclaiming your life starts with a single step.
