For centuries, the differences and inequalities between men and women have sparked heated debates—and the issue is still just as relevant today.
In Sydney, Australia, a female landscaper has ignited a viral conversation on social media by calling out a glaring double standard in the workplace. Why is it that men can work shirtless in the blazing heat, but women can’t?
On a scorching 40°C (104°F) day, Shianne Fox, a tradeswoman known as “The Bikini Tradie” on TikTok, vented her frustration about the unequal treatment she faces on the job.
“It’s a freaking 40-degree day and I’m the one who has to keep my shirt on while all the guys on-site get to go shirtless,” she said in a TikTok video, continuing, “It’s a double standard, it’s sexist, and I’m honestly over it. I just want to be topless like the guys—but no, apparently I’ll ‘distract them.’”
Fox, who often works in a bikini top due to the intense heat, explained she was simply asking for the same freedom as her male colleagues. In the male-dominated world of trades, “tradies” (a term used in Australia for skilled workers in construction, plumbing, and similar fields), she believes she should be treated equally.
A Fight for Gender Equality or a Step Too Far?
With over four years of experience working in trades, Fox is used to being one of the only women on-site. She’s comfortable with her body and sees no issue with her request for equal treatment. According to Fox, working topless shouldn’t be seen as “distracting” because, as she puts it, “It’s a natural thing.”
“Breasts are just part of the body. Everyone has them in one form or another, so why should mine be a problem?” Fox said. “If people are going to act childish and think it’s distracting, then maybe they should grow up.”
Despite her stance, not everyone agrees with her. Critics point out that professionalism and workplace norms exist for a reason—no matter how hot the weather gets.
Fox, who also shares content on an adult website, understands that her opinions might ruffle some feathers. However, she hopes her viral moment will help encourage more women to break into male-dominated industries like trades.
“I thought if I put myself out there, maybe other women will want to join the industry too,” she explained.
Not All Female Tradies Are on Her Side
Interestingly, not all women in the trade industry are backing Fox’s position. Some feel that her social media persona—showcasing videos of her working in a bikini top—undermines the credibility of female tradespeople.
One female tradie commented, “She does not speak for us female tradies,” while another added, “She’s making it harder for us to be taken seriously.”
Fox’s video has sparked thousands of comments, with many men supporting her call for equal treatment.
“Yep, totally agree—show the boys what you’ve got,” one man wrote, while another added, “I don’t think anyone would complain.”
However, not all reactions have been supportive. One critic quipped, “Surely there’s air conditioning in the kitchen?”
The Bigger Picture
While Fox’s debate about topless equality is attracting attention, the real issue might be even bigger. Women continue to be significantly underrepresented in blue-collar professions.
A 2023 survey by Deloitte revealed a staggering ratio of 12 men to every woman working in trade jobs. With such a gender gap, Fox’s viral moment raises an important question: Should women be fighting for the right to work topless, or is the real struggle about gaining equal access to these male-dominated industries in the first place?
Despite the gender imbalance, Fox enjoys her job in the trades. “A lot of people say you get catcalled, but it’s really not like that. If you go in there with confidence, hold your own, and don’t let men push you around, you’ll do fine,” she explained.
