Michelle Obama's mother, Marian Robinson, has sadly passed away at the age of 86, as confirmed by family members. She passed away peacefully this morning.
Michelle Obama took to X on Friday to express her grief, saying, "Marian Robinson, my mother, was my rock, always there to support me in every way I needed. She offered that same unwavering support to our entire family, and it is with heavy hearts that we share the news of her passing today."
Former President Barack Obama also paid tribute to Marian on X, stating, "There was and will only be one Marian Robinson." He continued, "In our sorrow, we find comfort in the extraordinary legacy she leaves behind. We will dedicate ourselves to living in a way that honors her example."
Born Marian Lois Shields on July 30, 1937, she was the mother of Michelle Obama, the former First Lady of the United States. Marian was married to Fraser Robinson III, a World War II veteran and longtime employee at the Chicago Water Department. Together, they raised two children, Craig and Michelle, in a modest South Side Chicago neighborhood.
Marian’s role in the family was pivotal, especially during Michelle Obama’s time in the White House. Her dedication to her family was evident, particularly in the way she helped raise her granddaughters, Malia and Sasha Obama, providing stability and a sense of normalcy during their years in the public eye. Despite the fame of her daughter and son-in-law, Marian remained a humble, steadfast presence within the family.
Marian’s upbringing was marked by the challenges of racial segregation. She often recalled the struggles of her father, Purnell Shields, who faced discrimination in securing employment due to his race, including being excluded from certain unions and construction firms.
After Michelle and Barack Obama’s presidency ended in 2017, Marian returned to Chicago, where she spent her remaining years.
