Elvis Presley is widely known for his iconic music career and one-of-a-kind voice that captivated millions around the globe. However, his flair extended beyond music, as he had a remarkable sense of both food and fashion (those blue suede shoes come to mind!).
But what many people may not know is that the rock legend also had a knack for design. A perfect example of this is his famous private jet, which beautifully reflected his distinctive style.
In 1962, Elvis purchased a Lockheed Jetstar and had it customized to match his personal taste. Stepping inside, one is immediately struck by the lavish wooden paneling, plush red velvet chairs, and rich carpeting.
Elvis owned the jet for over 35 years, but after his death in 1977, the plane was left unused. Among his collection of private aircraft, this Lockheed was one of several notable examples. He also owned a Convair 880, affectionately named "Lisa Marie," whose call sign was Hound Dog 1. Additionally, he had another JetStar, dubbed Hound Dog 2. His fleet of private planes reflected the extravagance of his lifestyle and his love for flying.
This particular plane sat on a road in Roswell, New Mexico, for decades. Recently, however, it found a new owner when it was auctioned off for $260,000 at an event in Florida. The winning bid was placed over the phone by an anonymous buyer.
When Elvis first soared in the skies with this jet, he often shared the experience with his father, Vernon Presley. After Elvis’s passing, the aircraft remained in New Mexico for over 30 years. While its exterior has faded somewhat over time, the plane is still in fairly good condition considering its age.
The interior is a nostalgic throwback to the King’s aesthetic, with walls lined in wood and seats upholstered in soft red velvet. The plane even features a "high-tech" television for its time and consists primarily of one large, spacious room with plenty of room for guests. Toward the back is a compact kitchen, where a now-vintage microwave stands, likely no longer functional. Imagine Elvis strolling to the kitchen to whip up one of his legendary sandwiches—peanut butter, mayonnaise, crispy bacon, and banana—perhaps even heating it up in that microwave. Talk about rock history!
The bathroom is equally as extravagant, complete with more velvet and a stylish sink. Compared to the cramped quarters on modern charter flights, this jet offered plenty of room and luxury.
It’s truly fascinating to get a glimpse into how Elvis traveled in such grand style! After all these years, the plane was recently sold during the Mecum Kissimmee Collector Car auction on January 8 for $260,000. While the identity of the new owner remains a mystery, they now own a piece of rock 'n' roll history.
