Woman Refuses to Babysit Her Grandkids, Even Though it Might Cause Her Daughter-in-law To Lose Her Job

Many people believe it's the grandparents' duty to care for their grandchildren when the parents are away. While most grandparents are eager to spend quality time with the kids, some parents may exploit this willingness by burdening them with excessive responsibilities.

A grandmother shared her concerns on Reddit about a delicate situation she faced.

After being a stay-at-home mom for four years, her daughter-in-law landed a well-paying job. The dilemma arose when she couldn't find a suitable babysitter for her two children. In search of a solution, she approached her mother-in-law, asking her to look after the kids temporarily for a week.

The grandmother declined and explained her reasons.

Reportedly, her daughter-in-law had unreasonable demands.

She expected the grandmother to prepare vegetarian meals for the children without providing the necessary ingredients. Additionally, the kids were not allowed to watch TV, and the grandmother was expected to keep them constantly engaged and entertained. The daughter-in-law even requested that the grandmother bring educational worksheets for their four-year-old.

Moreover, she expressed that she didn't want the grandmother's friends visiting. The grandmother mentioned that this would disrupt her usual interactions with her friends.

When her son called asking her to babysit, the grandmother told him she was reluctant due to his wife's demanding and unreasonable nature.

The grandmother clarified that she had no issue babysitting her other son's children.

The responses to her Reddit post varied.

“I’m so tired of people treating grandparents like free childcare. Kids are just kids, and it's okay if the rules are relaxed for a week... that's why they love spending time with grandparents!! You should make it clear that you'd love to help if the DIL is willing to compromise. If she won't, then it's her responsibility to find alternative care,” one commenter wrote.

Others criticized the grandmother more harshly, stating: “I thought you were going to say you’ve been asked to look after them full time, but it's only for a WEEK. While the rules might be excessive, you'd rather your DIL not take this job to support the family because it inconveniences you for just 5 days. Do the right thing and assist your son and DIL.”
