Malia Obama's upbringing has unfolded beneath the public eye, a reality she's long been accustomed to. As the daughter of former U.S. President Barack Obama, her life has been bathed in the spotlight, drawing ongoing media attention even to this day.
Recently, the 25-year-old unveiled her directorial debut, "The Heart," at the esteemed Sundance Film Festival. In a spotlight video by the Sundance Institute's "Meet the Artist" series, Malia disclosed her preference for the name Malia Ann, shedding her previous moniker.
Born Malia Ann Obama on July 4, 1998, her middle name pays homage to her paternal grandmother, who succumbed to ovarian cancer at 52 in 1995. Now, she's embraced her middle name while relinquishing her last name.
Discussing her inaugural short film, where she assumed dual roles as director and screenwriter, Malia described it as "an odd little story, somewhat of a fable, about a man grieving the death of his mother after she leaves him an unusual request in her will." Additionally, in a YouTube commentary on the short film, she elucidated, "The film is about lost objects and lonely people and forgiveness and regret, but I also think it works hard to uncover where tenderness and closeness can exist in these things."
"The Heart" marks her initial foray into the profession, following prior involvement in the writers' room for Donald's Amazon Prime show, "Swarm," where she co-wrote the fifth episode, "Girl, Bye."
Janine Nabers, co-creator of "Swarm," praised Malia's professionalism in a January 2023 Vanity Fair interview, noting her remarkable talents as a writer and artist. Nabers emphasized her substantial contributions, attesting to Malia's unwavering dedication to her craft.
Echoing similar sentiments, Stephen Glover, executive producer of "Swarm," emphasized Malia's grounded nature, affirming that her familial ties didn't sway their expectations. "No, she is really down-to-earth and cool. So it’s not an issue at all," he stated.
Malia Obama joins a lineage of celebrities who have opted to shed their family names, a list including Nicolas Cage, who changed his surname from Coppola, and Angelina Jolie, who dropped her father's surname, Voight.
For her directorial debut, Malia exuded a relaxed vibe, sporting minimal makeup, her curly hair cascading with delicate braids interwoven throughout.
