Gabby, a young lady, discovered herself seated in the attorney's office alongside her three siblings: Maya, Tasmin, and Robert. Anticipation filled the air as they all awaited the reading of their late mother's final wishes through her will.
The lawyer distributed envelopes to all four of them. Upon opening, each of Gabby's siblings found a one-dollar bill inside, leaving them perplexed, shocked, and disbelieving. Clueless about the situation, they turned their gaze towards Gabby, who still clutched her unopened envelope, sensing that it held more than a mere dollar bill.
However, before she could unravel its contents, her sister Maya abruptly snatched it away, exclaiming, "What the hell, Gabby?" The lawyer gasped at the unexpected outburst.
Addressing her other siblings, Maya continued, "This letter says that Mom left everything to Gabby. Her entire estate, the house, and some secret savings account. Really, Gabby? Because you were 'the only one who cared?'"
Gabby felt crushed by her sister's words. She never sought to be the favored child but merely believed it was natural to stand by her mother during illness without expecting any material return. Maya, Tasmin, and Robert had made their choices, while Gabby's choice was to care for her ailing mother.
Maya, with children of her own, Tasmin always consumed by work, and Robert indifferent to family time, learned that their mother's decision reflected gratitude for Gabby's dedication and love. The dollar bills served as a stark reminder of the time they had failed to give their mother while she was still alive.
The letter seemed to scorch Gabby's hands as she exclaimed, "I didn't ask for this. Listen! I need you to understand me." However, her siblings, fueled by anger, disregarded her pleas.
To set things right, Gabby proposed, "Let's divide Mom's savings equally. Not for extravagant and unnecessary things, but as a safety net for each of us." Her siblings reluctantly agreed, and together they visited the bank to settle the matter.
In her reflection, Gabby expressed that her mom's lesson wasn't about who cared the most, but about comprehending her feelings during her final moments. The four siblings gleaned a valuable lesson - family should always take precedence. They committed to monthly gatherings and remained close-knit.
