Black Canada Lynx Caught On Camera For The First Time

The Canada Lynx, scientifically known as Lynx canadensis, is a lynx species indigenous to North America, encompassing regions in Canada and parts of the United States.

Typically adorned with a fur coat of light brownish-gray, the Canada Lynx has occasionally been reported with individuals sporting black-colored fur.

While there had been no photographic evidence of the black-colored type until 2022, a stroke of luck allowed a fortunate individual to capture images that swiftly gained viral attention.

The sighting occurred in the vicinity of Whitehorse, a Yukon metropolis, in a rural residential neighborhood. A University of Alberta researcher, capturing the moment on a cell phone, successfully documented the black-furred Canada Lynx, revealing it at a distance of approximately 50 meters.

The remarkable discovery found its way into the journal Mammalia under the title “Paint it black: first record of melanism in Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis).”

Displaying its solitary and reclusive nature, the lynx was observed in the video amidst a rural setting with onlookers and a nearby dog. The lynx, reacting to the dog's barking, eventually retreated.

Despite the experts confirming its identity as a Canada lynx, the shaky video made it challenging to discern specific distinguishing traits of the animal.

Describing the lynx's features, Thomas Jung, an employee of the Government of Yukon, noted, "It had a black coat containing whitish gray guard hairs throughout, as well as whitish gray hairs in the facial ruff and the rostrum and dorsal regions."

Most lynx species share similar coloring, with the Canada lynx exhibiting prevalent silvery gray coats during winter and transitioning to reddish-brown hues in the summer.

The featured lynx, with its diverse coat colors, is considered exceptionally rare by Jung. He suggests that such variations are often evolutionary adaptations, either advantageous (adaptive) or detrimental (maladaptive).

Despite the absence of conclusive evidence on the advantages or disadvantages of melanism in animals, Jung leans towards viewing the lynx's feature as maladaptive. He speculates that the darker coat may compromise essential camouflage during winter hunts, potentially making the lynx more conspicuous in snowy environments.

The revelation of this unique creature through video footage has left observers astonished. Share your thoughts on this extraordinary find in the comments below!
