A Young Girl’s Incredible Discoveries

Nine-year-old Molly Sampson, a 4th grader hailing from Prince Frederick, Maryland, stumbled upon a remarkable discovery during her Christmas morning exploration at Calvert Beach.

This budding paleontologist finds joy in scouring Maryland's shores for shark teeth, driven by her belief that they're fascinating due to their ancient origins. Molly inherited this passion for fossils from her father, who instilled in her a love for treasure hunting, as described by her mother, Alicia Sampson.

Having amassed over 400 fossilized shark teeth over the years, Molly's latest find garnered widespread attention in just a few days. The fossil enthusiast uncovered an impressive 5-inch-long tooth belonging to a megalodon, the largest shark to have ever roamed Earth's oceans.

The Sampson family sought confirmation from Stephen Godfrey, a paleontology curator at Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons. Dr. Godfrey authenticated Molly's extraordinary find, stating that it once belonged to a megalodon, a shark comparable in size to a Greyhound bus, as Molly later discovered.

Recounting the moment she spotted the colossal tooth, Molly shared with NPR, “I went closer, and in my head, I was like, ‘Oh, my, that is the biggest tooth I’ve ever seen!'” She excitedly added, “I reached in and grabbed it, and dad said I was shrieking.”

Dr. Godfrey explained that Molly's discovery originated from the upper left jaw of a megalodon, estimated to be 45 to 50 feet long and dating back approximately 15 million years. The megalodon evolved such teeth to cut pieces of prey, similar to how great white sharks operate, rather than consuming it whole.

The term "Megalodon" itself translates to "giant tooth" in Greek, fittingly describing the size of the tooth Molly found, which matches the dimensions of her hand.

As Molly's story gained traction, her family decided to use it as a platform to encourage other children to spend more time outdoors and appreciate nature. Alicia expressed their desire to inspire kids to embrace outdoor activities, emphasizing the importance of connecting with the natural world.

The Sampson family encourages everyone to share Molly's awe-inspiring tale on Facebook, hoping it sparks enthusiasm for exploration and appreciation of nature among their family and friends.
